Pong 3: Turns 183 - 187 of Norway (Nate)

This week's session (8) was interrupted by a number of factors and was quite short, but it was still highly eventful. The War of the Great Sea continues! The occupation of the former Russian capital, St. Petersburg, continues as resistance builds on land.

We resume in the Atomic Era of 1785. War rages between the naval power of Norway (Nate) and the cultural juggernaut of Russia (Joe). Norway has just conquered St. Petersburg, the former Russian capital.

Turn 183- Cyrus turns

The conquest of a capital was the last straw, and everyone but Qin (China) quickly turns against me. Denouncements occur almost every turn.

The Great Sea War continues

Last time, I took St. Pete's with a scout, fully anticipating a heavy land force to retake the city the next turn, but the forces were not quite as heavy as I anticipated.

184- Russia's counterattack

The Summer 2017 patch moved Urban Defenses to Steel, so I was surprised when my occupation of the city didn't automatically begin with full walls. Instead it started only with half-walls and half-health (100 hp). Maybe it was because I conquered the city with an historical unit (scout)?

In any event, Russia's bombards open fire, but the city actually holds a little while.

184- A scout stops my privateer cold

In the north of Russia, my privateer encounters a lone scout holding the strait. If you think that a privateer can destroy an embarked scout in the atomic age, you'd be wrong! And you're probably a Civ5 player. I tried, but the ranged attack did nothing. It turns out, and this was news to me, that embarked units have a strength rating of their own, probably linked to the civ's era. Here, the 10 strength scout defends with 50 strength!

I'll eventually need to bring my battleships north to blast our way through.

185- Hans the German peacekeeper intercedes

The Russians were about to take St. Petes back, when suddenly a German peacekeeper named Hans threw himself into the main road into the city. Pleading with his former allies to stop this madness, he blocked the road with his body, delaying the re-conquest of St.Petes briefly.

185- Cossacks retake St.Petersburg

186- We quickly retake the city

The Russians retook the city but were unable to hold it. The puny defenses it mustered were annihilated by out battleships' cannons and an ironclad (a former admiral) sailed into the ruins.

St.Petersburg is in shambles. The once great city, whose population was upwards of 14 or more, is now a mere 4, though many of its districts and all its wonders stand.

Unlike the previous occupation, this time, perhaps because I used an ironclad to take the city instead of a scout, the Urban Defenses kicked in, and the walls were completely replenished. I'm not sure the Russians will be able to stop me from holding their cities now, and Joe sounds worried.

We've begun to talk of peace.

187- News of the world

Session End

Norway

Score

Heartland: Scandinavia

Russia

Farshore

The World in 1805

I have no idea what's going to happen next. Joe mentioned that he's willing to talk peace this week, so maybe we'll find some way to resolve this. Any peace deal would have to be at least as valuable as holding on to St.Petes, which is unlikely to be possible in his condition.

We discussed the Nubian situation, and it seems likely that Amanitore has about 35 turns until she completes the tech tree, at which point it'll only be a matter of time before she wins. I'm really not sure I can stop her - her military score is still greater than mine - but nuclear weapons can change everything, and I'm going to discover uranium in 4 turns.

Can Joe and I find a way to imagine peace in order to stop the Nubians? Can Norway equip nukes and conquer the world fast enough to stop Nubia from reaching Mars? Till next time...
