Pong 3: Turns 110-128 of Norway (Nate)

Joe and I had a rare opportunity for an extra session this afternoon over lunch so we took it and knocked out a session. The following reports on session 4.

The game picks up in the Renaissance Era in the year 980 AD. In our last session, the Norwegians raided Hong Kong and settled Trinkenhalle on the Farshore. This session was less dramatic, at least at home, so my report will be comparatively brief. The majority of our effort was spent preparing for the invasion of Kyoto and upgrading our fleet overseas.

Turn 110- Added Stewardship to boost science and commerce.

111- Policies update.

The discovery of Mercenaries grants Professional Army and Trade Confederation, which are both policies well suited to our strategy and civilization. This boosts my commerce to delightful degrees, as I'm pulling in about 80+ GPT even after paying the upkeep on my ever-expanding army. I love harbor economies.

111- Russia (Joe) is starting to set up embassies.

I suspect he drilled down for Diplomatic Service (probably to get Holy Wars), but he still got this before me. I'm pretty sure that I'm getting ahead of him in tech now, but I'm going to need to get this myself soon if I don't want to fall behind diplomatically.

114- Moving traders to Trinkenhalle to boost growth.

115- Persia reaches the Renaissance; tension between Germany & Scythia.

115- China asks me to go to war with Russia (Joe).

I actually got several of these offers during this period, just about one each from each of the AI. I suspect that this is primarily because Joe is Theocracy (vs. mostly Monarchies) and because he converted most of their cities away from their "natural" religions. In any event, he's pretty unpopular these days.

115- The Second Battle of Hong Kong begins.

A restored fleet, recently upgraded to caravels begins to descend on Hong Kong once more. I don't intend to take it, just to farm experience points and raid anything I find.

116- Galileo Galilei boosts science!

I was so disappointed to discover that this mountain range didn't have a valley in its core that would allow this bonus to be absurd, but the three mountain bonus for +500(~) science ain't bad at all. That's ten turns at my current rate! It basically gets me two free techs, so I nab Square Rigging (Frigates) and Military Engineering (armory/niter).

117- Great Admiral Yi Sun-Sin born!

Yet another +1 movement bonus, and the free iconclad could come in handy.

118- Rest of the world reaches Renaissance era.

118- Nubia  and Scythia declare war on Russia (Joe)!

In chat, he was pretty upset about this because he felt like he was on pretty good relations with the nations of the world. As I mentioned above, it seemed to me like he was becoming pretty unpopular for awhile now, but I wasn't paying attention that closely.

119- Denounce Russia for diplomatic boost with everyone.

119- Nubia is first to Industrial.

119- Second Battle for Hong Kong ends.

Most of my ships are lvl 1 or 2 now.

Turn 120: Empire Update (1200 AD)

Map, Rankings, Score

Heartland: Scandinavia

Overseas: The Farshore, including the fleet and Trinkenhalle

Tech

Civics

121- Traders are making a lot starting in Trinkenhalle

122- We build the Great Lighthouse

125- Hong Kong surprisingly sinks a young caravel.

125- Denounce Japan.

Japan recently converted Stavanger to Buddhism again, and I was hoping that I could declare a Holy War immediately as soon as I discovered Diplomatic Service, but this wasn't the case. The advanced Cassus Belli still require a denouncement, alas. TIL! Five more turns to wait.

127- Russia enters Industrial Era.

This surprised me because I have 2-3 more techs than he does, so he must be drilling down (again) for something.

128- Joe sues for peace with Nubia and Scythia.

128- Despite the joint war, Scythia and Nubia immediately stop getting along.

Not an especially dramatic or exciting session this time. The economy is strong and improving, and our vikings continue to grow stronger overseas. The recent discovery of Square Rigging (Frigates) is interesting. They did a ton of damage to the walls of Hong Kong, and with two-range, they could be devastating to a city without a navy. So the question is, do I hit St. Petersburg now or later?

Plan: I'm about to declare a Holy War on Japan in 2 turns, and except for one or two samurais, my berserkers, siege tower, and crossbows should make relatively quick work of Kyoto, which is still one of the largest cities in the game. I'll also be in a position to take Hong Kong at the rate my Frigates are pounding their defenses, but the diplomatic hit of taking a city-state this late might not be worth it. After that, I'll probably shift to Merchant Confederation and start transitioning into a more modern state while some of the warmonger penalties cool down.
